Tourist Mola

Welcome to all my Customers, Collectors, Quilters, Artist and viewers.

In respond to one of the most frequent questions about mola, if the artwork is vintage (collectibles), traditional  or just intended for tourist.

What are Tourist Molas?

When tourist travel to Panama they usually want to buy only 1 mola panel and not the entire blouse.  These panels are classified as commercial molas, the Guna will make these panels specific for quick sale and never intended to be part of a blouse.  They are made in appliques, embroidery with two layers of clothes, vibrant colors, normally portray bird, toucan, fish, hummingbird, flowers, flower, etc.

The work on the molas are excellent as any other mola.  They are more affordable and in vibrant colors.

Another reason why I offer the small molas is because quilters use the small panels to make quilts.

I have many geometric molas in small sizes that are more traditional and sometimes I have animals and other themes made using the traditional techniques (reverse applique) on a size of 8" x 8", 9" x 8/2", you need to visit my gallery of small molas and take a look.

What is a traditional, vintage mola or mola that has been part of a blouse?

The molas with reverse applique in larger size 16" x 13" or large, several layers of fabric, intricate designs, these are molas that are intended to be part of a blouse.  They are the authentic molas (with this I am not saying that the tourist molas are not made by the Guna Women, the difference is that they required less time for the elaboration), the traditionals are collectibles, and they do have more value in the future.  The theme on the larger molas are Cultural and Vintage, Geometric, Religious, Mythology. Land Animals, Sea Life Animals, Flowers in Geometric, etc.
